Resources for Women Returning to the Community

NMSC Combined Adult/Juvenile Justice Directory Information - The New Mexico Sentencing Commission, in a cooperative agreement with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) has created and maintains a directory of programs available to both juveniles and adults needing services. These directories are searchable by age group, type of service and geographic area. Each program listing includes as much of the following information as possible: Program name, contact information, description, eligibility, ages served, capacity, funding sources, CYFD contract division (if contracted through CYFD), non-profit status, CYFD client populations, areas of the state served and types of services offered.

MyCommunity NM Information; Home of the Salud Manual is the State's only bilingual, on-line resource directory. The project, which began in 2002, has been developed through an ongoing partnership with community leaders from La Comunidad Habla. Unlike most other resource directories that focus on particular populations and specific service needs, My NM includes health, social service, legal, transportation, recreation, and advocacy resources for all high-risk populations.

Benefits.Gov - the official website for the U.S. Government's information on benefits. It offers information on more than 1,000 Federal and state benefit programs. Complete the free and confidential questionnaire and the prescreening tool will generate a tailored list of programs just for you.

Drug Policy Alliance NM supports the work of the NM WJP and has been in the forefront of ending the war on drugs in New Mexico. NM Commission on the Status of Women has been in the forefront of women’s issues in New Mexico for more than 35 years. In addition to running numerous programs for women, it maintains an exhaustive list of support groups and resources addressing woman’s issue.

NM Legislature Website enables citizens to review pending legislation and to follow bills through the process. This site streams public hearings and provides all the information needed to participate in the legislative process.

Legal FACS provide free or low-cost legal services and domestic violence advocacy services to low-income individuals. Services are mainly provided through the Courthouse Lawyer Service (CLS) and Forms Clinic and include consultation and information on such issues as divorce, child custody, visitation, child support calculations and property division. AARDVARC An Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence Aid and Resource Collection This site is for people who have been subjected to violence, their families and friends, and the agencies and programs which serve them. Issues addressed here currently include: domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault. The goal of this website is to support those trying to remove themselves from abusive situations and build healthier, stronger lives.

On any given day, there are almost 600 women in prison in New Mexico and 500 women in local jails. Women re-enter their communities with unique needs and challenges related to children and family issues, employment, and substance abuse. For most women leaving prison, the transition following release from prison is loaded with land mines. If you are a women needing services, or know of a women who needs help, check out these links.
