In the past 30 years, the U.S. has seen an 800% increase in the incarceration of women and has the highest incarceration rate worldwide. Incarcerations of women for drug violations account for 40% of all women in prison. An additional 1/3 of women are incarcerated for non-violent property crimes motivated by drug use. NM WJP is working to change the criminal justice system so that women can receive gender-appropriate, evidence- based treatment in their home communities and avoid costly and unproductive incarceration.
